The purpose of my paper is to inform college students or the reader to be careful when conforming to society. At times it can be beneficial to conform, but it can also cause problems. When you see other students wearing name brand clothes or using the latest Ipod, it can be tempting to want to be like everyone else. You do not want to feel left out and you want to feel like you are up to date. It is alright to have these things, but you should not worry about trying to be like everyone else. When you do that, you lose your personality and individuality. The media and advertisers may use this idea when they try to sell their products. Their commercials may try to influence you to buy their products just because they want you to think everyone else is getting it. But there are many other ways that college students may feel pressured to conform. Students may feel pressured by their own family to pursue a college or major. Although these people may have good intentions, these are decisions that you should make on your own. You should consider everyone’s opinion, but you need to pick something that will be best for you. Conforming does not necessarily give you happiness and in most cases it will actually cause you to be less content. This commonplace paper is intended to make students be happy with their self and appreciate who they are. Although they are free to make their own decisions, they should not feel pressured into making decisions that they would not normally make.
Totally agree. Individualism is a bit of a rarity. People, especially young people have issues with what degree to conform to their society.
ReplyDeleteI have had trouble deciding what I want to do with my life, as I know many others have also. I have tried to be realistic rather than follow my dreams. I would love to see more and more people doing the opposite.
ReplyDeleteThe sad thing is that when people buy these name brand items that everyone else has, they get a satisfaction. People shouldn't get a satisfaction from being anything other than themselves.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a relevant issue with college students nowadays. Why waste the time making your own decisions when you can have someone else make them for you, after all?
ReplyDeleteMy mother always tells me that I should go to medical school and become a pediatrician. Although I have considered this from time to time, I have decided on attending graduate school in order to obtain my masters in teaching. She knows i want to teach but she still wants me to go to medical school. I know she means well but it is kind of annoying. The sad thing is that most people will not make the decision for themselves and they will only do what their parents tell them to. This often elades to an unhappy future. People need to be happy with who they are and what they are becoming.
ReplyDeleteI like this topic. I think it is unhealthy for complete comformation to society, as it lacks personal identity. In the fast-paced, globalized world of today, I believe personal identity is a very important ideal to have.
ReplyDeleteI really like this topic. I think that society puts a lot of pressure on people to conform. I think that it is very important for people to understand that being different is a good thing and that being happy about who they are is very important. I feel like we put too much pressure on ourselves to be "perfect" that we often lose track of who we really are.
ReplyDeletethis is very relevant, especially in today's world. teens are conforming just to fit in and it's wrong not to be yourself
ReplyDeleteWhat about conforming to an idea or behavior set that society deems as morally "good"? For example, conforming to laws that are contrary to your individualistic qualitites? A good one is smoking pot, it's against the law to be in possesion of it but what if part of your individuality involves exploring human nature through natural substances? Where do you draw the line?
