For this second blog, I watched the first episode of the Firefly series. This episode starts off with Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds and the battle of Serenity Valley. They ended up getting defeated, but it then flashes forward six years. Sergeant Reynolds is now the captain of a ship called the Serenity and their objective is to recover materials from abandoned ships. The crew then tries to sell these stolen goods, but were having trouble selling them to the man who hired them.
This idea is the focus of my discussion. Throughout the episode, the crew was stealing in order to earn money and make a living. This made me think; is it ever appropriate to steal? In the episode, the crew of the Serenity stole from this abandoned ship in the anticipation of selling it to someone. Although these actions were illegal, they were doing them in order to earn money. They were not concerned about the consequences or the penalty for their actions. After one episode, it is hard to tell if their actions were justified or if they are just criminals. This scene reminded me of scenes from other shows where someone might steal food to eat or other necessities for life. Although the scene from the episode is not nearly as severe as this example, it has the same basic premise. In both cases, people were stealing to try to improve their lives. I can understand this decision; however, I do not think it is the appropriate thing to do. I believe there are other actions the crew could take to earn money.
