Blog 3

For this second blog, I watched the first episode of the Firefly series.  This episode starts off with Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds and the battle of Serenity Valley.  They ended up getting defeated, but it then flashes forward six years.  Sergeant Reynolds is now the captain of a ship called the Serenity and their objective is to recover materials from abandoned ships.  The crew then tries to sell these stolen goods, but were having trouble selling them to the man who hired them.

This idea is the focus of my discussion.  Throughout the episode, the crew was stealing in order to earn money and make a living.  This made me think; is it ever appropriate to steal?  In the episode, the crew of the Serenity stole from this abandoned ship in the anticipation of selling it to someone.  Although these actions were illegal, they were doing them in order to earn money.  They were not concerned about the consequences or the penalty for their actions.  After one episode, it is hard to tell if their actions were justified or if they are just criminals.  This scene reminded me of scenes from other shows where someone might steal food to eat or other necessities for life.  Although the scene from the episode is not nearly as severe as this example, it has the same basic premise.  In both cases, people were stealing to try to improve their lives.  I can understand this decision; however, I do not think it is the appropriate thing to do.  I believe there are other actions the crew could take to earn money.

Blog 2: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

I chose to watch Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.  This episode had an intriguing concept and a plot that anyone can understand.  At first I wasn’t sure what to think, but by the end, the songs started to get stuck in my head and I found myself almost singing along.

Throughout the episode, Dr. Horrible’s goal of becoming an evil villain is challenged by his own emotions and experiences.  He starts to fall in love with the girl from the Laundromat, but becomes jealous when she starts to have feelings for his nemesis, Captain Hammer.  Dr. Horrible wants to be an evil villain, but his love for this girl contradicts his goals.  Dr. Horrible acts like he wants to be a villain, but he must do something evil enough to become one. Even though these are his intentions, it seems as though he is actually a good person.  Throughout the story, you start to feel like his goals are changing and that he does not truly want to become a villain.

It is interesting to think about the decisions and sacrifices that we have to make in life in order to accomplish our goals.  It is also interesting to see how different experiences can affect your goals and cause them to change.  This concept reminded me a lot of a student’s decisions to choose a college to go to.  Although there are many factors that influence your decision, it is best to make a choice that is best for you. In the show, even though Dr. Horrible did not intentionally try to hurt anyone, his actions helped him accomplish his ultimate goal.

Blog 1

I grew up in the small town of Covington, Ohio where I lived on a farm.  I went to Concord Elementary School and then went on to Troy High School.  While growing up, baseball has always been an important aspect of my life.  It gave me something to do, but it was also where I met a lot of my friends.  We had several elementary schools, so most of my friends were from the same school.  But since I played baseball, I met a lot of other kids from other schools and I was able to make more friends.  This made the transition to high school easier and more interesting.
I am a freshman here at Ohio State and I am currently studying engineering.  Right now I am in mechanical, but I am still unsure about what I really want to do.  Math has always been one of my favorite subjects, so I wanted to go into a career that I would enjoy.  But in my free time, I like to listen and play music.  I have been trying to learn how to play the guitar and it gives me something to do.  I enjoy rock or alternative music, but my favorite band is the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  But I also enjoy other bands like Muse and Shinedown.
I believe “It is important to spend time by yourself, but you should appreciate the time you get to spend with other people.”  This is one trait that I think most people should follow.  I enjoy having a good time and I try to make the most out of my opportunities.  But you never know how much time you will have with your friends, so you should value the time you get to spend with them.
